The Last Night - Part 3 (Sodom and Gomorrah)

The last night of Sodom and Gomorrah had arrived. God had promised that if 10 righteous were found in the cities He would not destroy them. So the two angels embarked on their way to Sodom with a dual mission.

The state of the world now is similar to that which existed in the days of Lot, when Sodom's corruption called for the angel's visit to that wicked city, to see whether the cries coming up before heaven were of such a character that the inhabitants of beautiful Sodom -- a city that had been so highly favored of God -- had so corrupted their ways before the Lord that there was no hope of their redemption. God's wrath was revealed so signally because the corruption of the Sodomites was so deep. The heavenly visitants could see for themselves that the Sodomites had passed the limits of divine forbearance. *1

Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. Genesis 19:1

And now the last night of Sodom was approaching. Already the clouds of vengeance cast their shadows over the devoted city. But men perceived it not. While angels drew near on their mission of destruction, men were dreaming of prosperity and pleasure. The last day was like every other that had come and gone. Evening fell upon a scene of loveliness and security. A landscape of unrivaled beauty was bathed in the rays of the declining sun. The coolness of eventide had called forth the inhabitants of the city, and the pleasure-seeking throngs were passing to and fro, intent upon the enjoyment of the hour. * 2

As the evening draws on, the men of Sodom see the two messengers approaching, but as they have concealed their heavenly character, they appear as common men coming in from the country to visit Sodom. If the veil could be removed from our eyes we should often see in the form of men, the powerful messengers of mercy or of wrath among us. They warn, they caution, they reprove, they protect from a thousand dangers, and yet we know not that the angel's blessing has come to us. *3

In the twilight two strangers drew near to the city gate. They were apparently travelers coming in to tarry for the night. None could discern in those humble wayfarers the mighty heralds of divine judgment, and little dreamed the gay, careless multitude that in their treatment of these heavenly messengers that very night they would reach the climax of the guilt which doomed their proud city. But there was one man who manifested kindly attention toward the strangers and invited them to his home. Lot did not know their true character, but politeness and hospitality were habitual with him; they were a part of his religion--lessons that he had learned from the example of Abraham. Had he not cultivated a spirit of courtesy, he might have been left to perish with the rest of Sodom. Many a household, in closing its doors against a stranger, has shut out God's messenger, who would have brought blessing and hope and peace. *2

Although, Lot had lived a long time in the midst of evil, he had not lost his hospitality.

And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.” But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Genesis 19:2, 3

Remember that at this point the angels had not yet disclosed their mission. Lot did not even know they were angels from heaven.

Seeing the abuse to which strangers were exposed in Sodom, Lot made it one of his duties to guard them at their entrance, by offering them entertainment at his own house. He was sitting at the gate as the travelers approached, and upon observing them, he rose from his place to meet them, and bowing courteously, said, "Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night." They seemed to decline his hospitality, saying, "Nay; but we will abide in the street." Their object in this answer was twofold--to test the sincerity of Lot and also to appear ignorant of the character of the men of Sodom, as if they supposed it safe to remain in the street at night. Their answer made Lot the more determined not to leave them to the mercy of the rabble. He pressed his invitation until they yielded, and accompanied him to his house. *2

This character trait that Lot had developed made his salvation possible.
Lot, Abraham's nephew, though he had made his home in Sodom, was imbued with the patriarch's spirit of kindness and hospitality. Seeing at nightfall two strangers at the city gate, and knowing the dangers sure to beset them in that wicked city, Lot insisted on bringing them to his home. To the peril that might result to himself and his household he gave no thought. It was a part of his lifework to protect the imperiled and to care for the homeless, and the deed performed in kindness to two unknown travelers brought angels to his home. Those whom he sought to protect, protected him. At nightfall he had led them for safety to his door; at the dawn they led him and his household forth in safety from the gate of the doomed city. *4

Hospitality is a quality that we also need to practice. Is Lot the only one who was entertained angels?

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. Hebrews 13:2

But Lot knew the condition of the inhabitants of this city. So he quickly formulated a plan to bring them to his home and protect them from the dangers of the city.

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” Genesis 19:4, 5

He had hoped to conceal his intention from the idlers at the gate by bringing the strangers to his home by a circuitous route; but their hesitation and delay, and his persistent urging, caused them to be observed, and before they had retired for the night, a lawless crowd gathered about the house. It was an immense company, youth and aged men alike inflamed by the vilest passions. The strangers had been making inquiry in regard to the character of the city, and Lot had warned them not to venture out of his door that night, when the hooting and jeers of the mob were heard, demanding that the men be brought out to them. *2

So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.” And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door. Genesis 19:6-11

Lot was determined to do everything possible to protect his guests. But in the end it was the angels that protected him. How many times have we been protected by angels and we do not even realize it!

Knowing that if provoked to violence they could easily break into his house, Lot went out to try the effect of persuasion upon them. "I pray you, brethren," he said, "do not so wickedly," using the term "brethren" in the sense of neighbors, and hoping to conciliate them and make them ashamed of their vile purposes. But his words were like oil upon the flames. Their rage became like the roaring of a tempest. They mocked Lot as making himself a judge over them, and threatened to deal worse with him than they had purposed toward his guests. They rushed upon him, and would have torn him in pieces had he not been rescued by the angels of God. The heavenly messengers "put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door." The events that followed, revealed the character of the guests he had entertained. "They smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door." Had they not been visited with double blindness, being given up to hardness of heart, the stroke of God upon them would have caused them to fear, and to desist from their evil work. *2

How terrible the condition of the inhabitants of Sodom! They shouted to Lot to bring his guests to them that they may know them. But Lot was so determined to protect them that he offered his own daughters to try and placate their desires! But the inhabitants were directly controlled by the enemy. Therefore, the angels had to act by blinding them all and extending his hand to protect Lot.

That last night was marked by no greater sins than many others before it; but mercy, so long slighted, had at last ceased its pleading. The inhabitants of Sodom had passed the limits of divine forbearance--"the hidden boundary between God's patience and His wrath." The fires of His vengeance were about to be kindled in the vale of Siddim. *2

The Angels confirmed that there was no alternative but complete destruction. God's wrath would be unleashed.

The angels had come to see if there were any in the city who were not corrupted, and could be persuaded to flee from the impending doom that threatened Sodom. That night the evil doers added the last drop to their cup of iniquity, and the wrath of God could no longer be delayed. *3

The sins of today compared with the one from the past.

The Redeemer of the world declares that there are greater sins than that for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Those who hear the gospel invitation calling sinners to repentance, and heed it not, are more guilty before God than were the dwellers in the vale of Siddim. And still greater sin is theirs who profess to know God and to keep His commandments, yet who deny Christ in their character and their daily life. In the light of the Saviour's warning, the fate of Sodom is a solemn admonition, not merely to those who are guilty of outbreaking sin, but to all who are trifling with Heaven-sent light and privileges. *2

Right now we give ourselves completely to the Lord. We are about to finish our last night, the last night of this world. Are our names inscribed in the Book of Life?

The Last Night - Part 2 (Sodom and Gomorrah)

The last night of Sodom and Gomorrah was approaching. The end was near. But the Lord in his mercy revealed to Abraham His plans.

Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? Genesis 18:16-18

Before the time of Sodom's overthrow, two angels visited Abraham and were courteously entertained. As they were passing on their way to Sodom, Abraham accompanied them, and they revealed to the patriarch the errand for which they had come,--to destroy Sodom. They told Abraham that because of the grievous wickedness of the inhabitants, the city was to be destroyed. *1

And the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” Genesis 18:20, 21

The Lord was merciful with these two cities. He had given many them many opportunities, but His mercy Has a limit. The two angels went to Sodom to check to confirm its sinful state. In the following study we will see the other objective these two angels had.

Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.” Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?” So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it. And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?” So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.” Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.” Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten. So the LORD went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. Genesis 18:22-33

Abraham knew that Lot was in this place, and although he had been taught of God, he could not believe that the inhabitants of Sodom were so utterly corrupt. He began to plead that the righteous should not perish with the wicked, that if a certain number of the godly were there, the city might be spared. Pleading for the city, he decreased the number of righteous that would be likely to be found in the city, until he reached the number of ten. But although God would have spared the city if ten righteous persons could have been found there, that number could not be made up to redeem the city. *1

What a terrible condition these two cities were in. If just 10 righteous people would had been found, just 10, the city would have been spared. Abraham did his best to intercede, nothing more could be done for them.

With deep reverence and humility he urged his plea…Himself a sinner, he pleaded in the sinner's behalf. Such a spirit all who approach God should possess. Yet Abraham manifested the confidence of a child pleading with a loved father. He came close to the heavenly Messenger, and fervently urged his petition…Though Lot had become a dweller in Sodom, he did not partake in the iniquity of its inhabitants. Abraham thought that in that populous city there must be other worshipers of the true God…Abraham asked not once merely, but many times. Waxing bolder as his requests were granted, he continued until he gained the assurance that if even ten righteous persons could be found in it, the city would be spared. *2

Such is the spirit that we must have towards the souls who are perishing without hope.

Love for perishing souls inspired Abraham's prayer. While he loathed the sins of that corrupt city, he desired that the sinners might be saved. His deep interest for Sodom shows the anxiety that we should feel for the impenitent. We should cherish hatred of sin, but pity and love for the sinner. All around us are souls going down to ruin as hopeless, as terrible, as that which befell Sodom. *2

Meditate on these solemn and important words:

Every day the probation of some is closing. Every hour some are passing beyond the reach of mercy. And where are the voices of warning and entreaty to bid the sinner flee from this fearful doom? Where are the hands stretched out to draw him back from death? Where are those who with humility and persevering faith are pleading with God for him? *2

The end is near. Like the cities of the plain the last night for this world is coming. Perhaps for many it has arrived or soon will. Unfortunately, people continue to ignore the fact that this world has already been condemned. However, we must do everything possible to share this message not only of admonition, but of great hope and eternal salvation!

The Last Night - Part 1 (Sodom and Gomorrah)

And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Revelation 18:4, 5

This is the first in a series of studies in which we will analyze the instructions that God gave His elect to leave the cities because their destruction was imminent.

We will study in depth the decision that Lot took to dwell in Sodom and the call he received to leave the city. Then we will look at the same message Jesus gave His disciples to leave Jerusalem. Finally, we will apply the events that transpired to the call that we will soon be given to leave the cities and escape the wrath of God that will be poured over them.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was not something that God decided in an instant and it was not something that should have taken His elect by surprise.

Abraham presented Lot with a decision, where would he choose to live?

And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere…like the garden of the LORD…Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other. Genesis 13:10, 11

Fairest among the cities of the Jordan Valley was Sodom, set in a plain which was "as the garden of the Lord" in its fertility and beauty. Here the luxuriant vegetation of the tropics flourished. Here was the home of the palm tree, the olive, and the vine; and flowers shed their fragrance throughout the year. Rich harvests clothed the fields, and flocks and herds covered the encircling hills. Art and commerce contributed to enrich the proud city of the plain. The treasures of the East adorned her palaces, and the caravans of the desert brought their stores of precious things to supply her marts of trade. With little thought or labor, every want of life could be supplied, and the whole year seemed one round of festivity.* 1

Undoubtedly, Sodom was an attractive place. Similarly, many of our cities are attractive. These are the places where "art and commerce" contribute to the enrichment of man. These are places where man is supplied with every want of life. Moreover, these are the places where the everyday activities consume all of man’s time.

It is Satan's purpose to attract men and women to the cities, and to gain his object he invents every kind of novelty and amusement, every kind of excitement. And the cities of the earth today are becoming as were the cities before the Flood.* 2

In what moral and spiritual state were Sodom and Gomorrah?

But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD. Genesis 13:13

The profusion reigning everywhere gave birth to luxury and pride…The love of pleasure was fostered by wealth and leisure, and the people gave themselves up to sensual indulgence.*1

There is nothing more desired among men than riches and leisure, and yet these gave birth to the sins that brought destruction upon the cities of the plain. Their useless, idle life made them a prey to Satan's temptations, and they defaced the image of God, and became satanic rather than divine. *1

Idleness is the greatest curse that can fall upon man, for vice and crime follow in its train. It enfeebles the mind, perverts the understanding, and debases the soul…He is never more successful than when he comes to men in their idle hours. *1

In Sodom there was mirth and revelry, feasting and drunkenness. The vilest and most brutal passions were unrestrained. The people openly defied God and His law and delighted in deeds of violence. Though they had before them the example of the antediluvian world, and knew how the wrath of God had been manifested in their destruction, yet they followed the same course of wickedness. *1

And the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” Genesis 18:20, 21

How many righteous and faithful people were in Sodom and Gomorrah? Not even ten in the entire city.

Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” Genesis 18:32

Did the inhabitants of these cities know that God existed? Did they know about Abraham? Did they have an opportunity to repent and be saved?

Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— Genesis 14:21-23

At the time of Lot's removal to Sodom, corruption had not become universal, and God in His mercy permitted rays of light to shine amid the moral darkness. When Abraham rescued the captives from the Elamites, the attention of the people was called to the true faith. Abraham was not a stranger to the people of Sodom, and his worship of the unseen God had been a matter of ridicule among them; but his victory over greatly superior forces, and his magnanimous disposition of the prisoners and spoil, excited wonder and admiration. While his skill and valor were extolled, none could avoid the conviction that a divine power had made him conqueror. And his noble and unselfish spirit, so foreign to the self-seeking inhabitants of Sodom, was another evidence of the superiority of the religion which he had honored by his courage and fidelity.* 1

In what condition are our cities in today?

The state of corruption and apostasy that in the last days would exist in the religious world, was presented to the prophet John in the vision of Babylon, "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." Revelation 17:18. *1

What is man’s greatest desire?

Like the dwellers in the vale of Siddim, the people are dreaming of prosperity and peace. * 1

What is actually found in the cities of the world?

When Lot entered Sodom he fully intended to keep himself free from iniquity and to command his household after him. But he signally failed. The corrupting influences about him had an effect upon his own faith, and his children's connection with the inhabitants of Sodom bound up his interest in a measure with theirs. The result is before us.* 1

Many are still making a similar mistake. In selecting a home they look more to the temporal advantages they may gain than to the moral and social influences that will surround themselves and their families. They choose a beautiful and fertile country, or remove to some flourishing city, in the hope of securing greater prosperity; but their children are surrounded by temptation, and too often they form associations that are unfavorable to the development of piety and the formation of a right character. The atmosphere of lax morality, of unbelief, of indifference to religious things, has a tendency to counteract the influence of the parents. Examples of rebellion against parental and divine authority are ever before the youth; many form attachments for infidels and unbelievers, and cast in their lot with the enemies of God.* 1

Those who secure for their children worldly wealth and honor at the expense of their eternal interests, will find in the end that these advantages are a terrible loss. Like Lot, many see their children ruined, and barely save their own souls. Their lifework is lost; their life is a sad failure. Had they exercised true wisdom, their children might have had less of worldly prosperity, but they would have made sure of a title to the immortal inheritance.* 1

What should we really consider?

In choosing a home, God would have us consider, first of all, the moral and religious influences that will surround us and our families. We may be placed in trying positions, for many cannot have their surroundings what they would; and whenever duty calls us, God will enable us to stand uncorrupted, if we watch and pray, trusting in the grace of Christ. But we should not needlessly expose ourselves to influences that are unfavorable to the formation of Christian character. When we voluntarily place ourselves in an atmosphere of worldliness and unbelief, we displease God and drive holy angels from our homes.* 1

The heritage that God has promised to His people is not in this world. Abraham had no possession in the earth, "no, not so much as to set his foot on." Acts 7:5. He possessed great substance, and he used it to the glory of God and the good of his fellow men; but he did not look upon this world as his home. *1

Our inheritance is not in this world. Our treasures should be made up in heaven where everything is eternal.

The fulfillment of God's promise may seem to be long delayed--for "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (2 Peter 3:8); it may appear to tarry; but at the appointed time "it will surely come, it will not tarry." Habakkuk 2:3.* 1

And the Bible plainly teaches that the promises made to Abraham are to be fulfilled through Christ. All that are Christ's are "Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise"--heirs to "an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away"--the earth freed from the curse of sin. Galatians 3:29; 1 Peter 1:4. For "the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High;" and "the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." Daniel 7:27; Psalm 37:11. *1

God gave to Abraham a view of this immortal inheritance, and with this hope he was content. "By faith he sojourned in the Land of Promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: for he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." Hebrews 11:9, 10.* 1

Of the posterity of Abraham it is written, "These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." Verse 13. We must dwell as pilgrims and strangers here if we would gain "a better country, that is, an heavenly." Verse 16. Those who are children of Abraham will be seeking the city which he looked for, "whose builder and maker is God." *1

What great promise we have, glory and honor be to God who lives forever and ever!

The Angel Of God

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1:1-4

To our Lord Jesus be all the honor and glory because he is God and His mercy endures forever!

The Bible gives various titles to Jesus. It’s important to first acknowledge that Jesus is God and these titles do not diminish his divinity, instead they help describe his work.

In the previous study we noticed that Jesus is "Michael your prince," "Michael the great prince" and "Michael the archangel" (Read: Michael Our Prince).

In this study we note the title, "the Angel of the Lord." I stress once again that Jesus is not a created being for He and the Father are one. Jesus is our God.

We will start with a well-known story:

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Exodus 3:1-6

It was Jesus who appeared to Moses in the midst of the bush burning with fire. We note that he refers to Jesus as "the Angel of the Lord" because He is the messenger of God the Father, while also being God. No doubt, "the Angel of the Lord" refers not to a created being but to God Himself.

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us. Acts 7:37, 38

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: Malachi 3:1, 2

Some versions use angel the King James version uses “messenger of the covenant" but they both mean the same. Such characteristics only Jesus possesses. He is the messenger of the covenant, is our hope. Only his chosen can withstand His coming because He is a purifying fire and an eraser of our sins.

Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him. But if you indeed obey His voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. For My Angel will go before you and bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.... Exodus 23:20-23

As we saw in the previous study, the apostle John declares only Jesus bears the name of the Father. Only Jesus can pardon our transgressions.

And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.” Then he said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talk with me. Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.” And He said, “I will wait until you come back.” So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat, and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot; and he brought them out to Him under the terebinth tree and presented them. The Angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And he did so. Then the Angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire rose out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. And the Angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the LORD. So Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord GOD! For I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face.” Then the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die. Judges 6:12-23

Interestingly, the Angel of the Lord, God the son, was the messenger of the Lord during this time. This is why Gideon offered a sacrifice in worship and gratitude to the Angel of God who would deliver them. It is also the reason why Gideon, and as discussed in the following verses, Manoa were afraid for they had seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.

And the Angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. Then Manoah said to the Angel of the LORD, “Please let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.” And the Angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the LORD.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the LORD.) Then Manoah said to the Angel of the LORD, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?” And the Angel of the LORD said to him, “Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?” So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it upon the rock to the LORD. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on— it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground. And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!Judges 13:3, 15-20, 22

Recall that Isaiah gives the name of Wonderful to Jesus (Isaiah 9:6).

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” Zechariah 3:1, 2, 4

It is Jehovah (the Angel of the Lord) that says "the Lord rebuke you." That is Jehovah's son tells Satan, "the Lord rebuke you." These are the same words Jesus or Michael pronounces to Satan when discussing the body of Moses (Jude 1:9).

Further still, it is the Angel (Jehovah the son) who tells Joshua, "I have removed your iniquity…and I will clothe you with rich robes”, something only God can do.

The Angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.” Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” And the Angel of the LORD said to her: “Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son...Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” Genesis 16:9-13

We see the exchange is made time after time between the Angel of the Lord and the Lord. Both are the same, God the Son.

Another classic story, that reveals Jesus as God and the messenger of the Father, is of Abraham and Isaac.

But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. Genesis 22:11-17

The Angel of the Lord is the one who made the promise to Abraham, by His own name He swore to Abraham. That is an authority only God can assume.

Lets not forget that the word “angel” means “messenger”. That is why the three angels message is a message that WE will give as God's messengers to the world.

The purpose of all this is to conclude that there is no greater or better messenger of God than the Lord Jesus.

Through Him we know the Father, through Him we are reconciled with the Father through Him we are saved! Through Jesus, those who sleep in the Lord shall be raised incorruptible, through Him we will be changed, through Him we reach heaven! And all is done just for love!

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:3

Michael Our Prince

Who is Michael? In the Bible we only find a few verses referring to Michael.

But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. Daniel 10:21

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. Daniel 12:1

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels. Revelation 12:7

In these first three verses we see that the description given to Michael is "your prince" and "the great prince". So who is our great Prince?

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Now lets look at the verse that has brought confusion to many.

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. Jude 1:9

Some argue that the description of "archangel" means that Michael is not Jesus (because Jesus is God) but is simply one of the most powerful angels in heaven.

However, lets look at the meaning of this name and title:

“Michael” - Who is like God?

This name can only be given to Jesus because who else is like God, but Jesus?

Lets look at the title of “archangel”

  • It is composed of the two Greek words:
    • arch / archo - first, main, chief, principal, to govern, to send
    • angel / angelos – messenger

Now we understand a little better why Michael is described as "your prince", "the great prince" and "archangel".

In the next study will look at the title that is given to the Jehovah the son, "Angel of Jehovah", in the Old Testament. This does not diminish the divinity of Jesus, but simply is a title that describes the work He does.

I conclude with the last part of verse:

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. Jude 1:9

Some say, Michael is not Jesus because he rebuked Satan in the name of the Lord. But this is not the first time we see this.

And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zechariah 3:1, 2

The Lord Jesus, not only when He was on earth, acted on behalf of the Father. The creation, His sacrifice on the cross, redemption and the second coming, all are done to glorify the Father, our God. Our salvation, the love God has for us is manifested through Jesus.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him…Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. John 14:6, 7, 10-14

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do...John 14:20-31

How extraordinary is Jesus, our creator, our redeemer! Through Him we know the Father. He deserves all honor and all glory. For the Lord Jesus, being God, died for us to manifest the love of the Father. Thus Satan and sin are defeated.

Therefore, He says, “let not your heart be troubled” because He is preparing mansions for us and will return soon.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17

Legion

This is an introduction to a more important Bible topic: who is Michael?

I felt the need to introduce the topic with a warning to God’s people. We must close the avenues of the soul to the insinuations of Satan. In this occasion I refer to films that are now out in theaters, especially the film, Legion.

While we preach in the pulpits of our churches (in the house of God), the enemy preaches from his own pulpit, television (including movies). Unfortunately, we have drifted so far away from the inspired advice that many Adventists enter the realm of the Devil when they go to a theatre or they invite him in the home through the television.

I actually tremble when I review the great amount of light that we have on the subjects of spiritualism and Satan’s attacks. Despite understanding how dangerous it is to enter into enemy territory, God’s people now see theaters as an acceptable form of entertainment.

Many might believe that we are outdated in condemning attendance to movie theatres but here is the reality: the angels of the Lord do not enter into such places and those who ignore this fact are exposed to the forces of evil without any divine protection.

Knowing how terrible the Devils power is I give this warning: Hollywood has now accepted spiritualism to the point where society sees it as something normal, even Protestant churches are accepting these beliefs, (Read: Prophetic Fulfillment - Babylon Is Fallen, Is fallen)

I've written more than enough about spiritualism, for God's children to continue to ignoring these warnings.

Especially with movies like:

  • Jennifer's Body (A young woman possessed by a demon)
  • Paranormal Activity (a demon who haunts a lady)
  • Harry Potter (children using magic)
  • Daybreakers (vampires seeking to exterminate humans)
  • The Lovely Bones (a girl who after being killed, her spirit descends from heaven and watches over her family)

Just to name a few of the many that are coming out. But in my opinion the worst of all is Legion.

I state this is the most clear and direct way possible. THE CHILDREN OF GOD MUST NOT SEE THESE MOVIES!

First note that the cinema, films and even television are an efficient means by which the enemy can possess a person.

Some might doubt the existence of Satan and of demons. But if the veil of the invisible were removed we would be terrified to see the hosts of darkness all around us.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenlyplaces. Ephesians 6:12

In the movie Legion, the enemy not only uses this medium (film) as his pulpit but he makes a direct attack on the plan of salvation, and on Jesus himself.

The plot is centered on the idea that that God will destroy the world just as He did with the great flood, but this time humans will be exterminated by His own angels, implying that God is unjust and cruel (the same accusation that Lucifer made in heaven).

Moreover, Michael is presented as an angel who rebelled against God and fell from heaven to earth to protect humanity, especially an unborn child.

In this way, Michael is taking the place of Lucifer.

But It was Lucifer who rebelled against God in heaven, it was Lucifer who was cast out of heaven to earth and it was Lucifer who prompted the first couple to sin.

How you are fallen from heaven, o Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit. Isaiah 14:12-15

And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9

Can you imagine the impact these images, these ideas are will have on people as they watch this film? Even worse, can you imagine what Satan and his fallen angels can do to people who venture into his territory?

Notice also that the Bible refers to the name Legion.

Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.” For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. Mark 5:1-10

Recall that the second angel's message was not completely fulfilled, and therefore; will be repeated again before the end.

After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! Revelation 18:1-2

What warning do we receive?

...Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time. Revelation 12:12

What should we be doing?

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— Ephesians 6:10, 11, 14-18

It's time to wake up, time to prepare. The coming of Christ is near!

The Lord Is Coming Soon!

I am not surprised that there are so many websites explicitly devoted to criticizing Adventist and their beliefs. Nor am I surprised that some of these sites are hosted by ex-Adventists. We have been branded as a religion that preaches a message of fear, fear of things to come, fear of persecution. Unknowingly, by doing so, these people are fulfilling prophecy. The Bible tells us:
But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Matthew 24:37-39

How many people were saved? Only Noah and his small family. What condition was the world in, in Noah's time?
And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.. Genesis 6:3, 5
And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and behold it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. Then said God to Noah: I've decided the end of all, because the earth is filled with violence because of them, and behold, I will destroy the earth. Genesis 6:11-13
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Genesis 6:8
Note that 120 years pass from the time Noah was told to build the ark until the destruction of the world! It was 120 years of preaching, 120 years of warning, 120 years of Noah foretelling the destruction of this world!
You can imagine the things that were said to Noah and his family every time he cut down a tree. The inspired pen tells us that Noah preached with each blow of his hammer.
Might they have called him crazy, fanatical, alarmist, for only preaching about destruction? Would they have asked why he did not preach about peace and love? Why did he not speak of God's mercy? Most likely he did speak of God mercy but he had a message from God which he preached with urgency even though the flood came 120 years later. Unfortunately, with 120 years of preaching only 8 people were saved!
The apostle Peter tells us,
knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water. 2 Peter 3:3-5
Remember that the apostles preached the second coming of Christ. How many years have passed since Peter wrote about the great day of the Lord? So he went on to say,
For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:5-9
Be assured that the Lord is coming, and although the world does not want to hear this we must continue to preach it! Otherwise, the Lord’s return will take us by surprise.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 2 Peter 3:10
Our advice:

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless. 2 Peter 3:11-14
Finally, we again are warned just as Jesus himself warned us,
…speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:16-18

The Danger Of Date-setting

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.*1

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” *2

The Word of God is clear in saying that no one knows when the great day of the Lord will be, not even the angels in heaven. But what we can be sure of is that Jesus is coming soon because the signs He left of His soon return are being fulfilled.

Moreover, the reason we were given signs of His prompt return is because we don’t know the date. But such signs serve as a warning to all that we must be prepared. We must live as if the Lord would come today, rather than worrying about a specific date.

The servant of the Lord speaks about the dangers of setting dates.

The definite time of our Lord's coming is declared to be beyond the ken of mortals. Even the angels who minister unto those who shall be heirs of salvation know not the day nor the hour.*3

Because the times repeatedly set have passed, the world is in a more decided state of unbelief than before in regard to the near advent of Christ. They look upon the failures of the time setters with disgust; and because men have been so deceived, they turn from the truth substantiated by the word of God that the end of all things is at hand.*3

Those who so presumptuously preach definite time, in so doing gratify the adversary of souls; for they are advancing infidelity rather than Christianity. They produce Scripture and by false interpretation show a chain of argument which apparently proves their position. But their failures show that they are false prophets, that they do not rightly interpret the language of inspiration. The word of God is truth and verity, but men have perverted its meaning. These errors have brought the truth of God for these last days into disrepute. *3

Those who think they must preach definite time in order to make an impression upon the people do not work from the right standpoint. The feelings of the people may be stirred and their fears aroused, but they do not move from principle. An excitement is created; but when the time passes, as it has done repeatedly, those who moved out upon time fall back into coldness, darkness, and sin, and it is almost impossible to arouse their consciences without some great excitement. *3

Not knowing the exact date does not mean we should stop preaching that Christ is coming!

The signs foretold in prophecy are fast fulfilling around us. This should arouse every true follower of Christ to zealous action.*3

In Noah's day the inhabitants of the old world laughed to scorn what they termed the superstitious fears and forebodings of the preacher of righteousness. He was denounced as a visionary character, a fanatic, an alarmist. "As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man." Men will reject the solemn message of warning in our day, as they did in Noah's time. They will refer to those false teachers who have predicted the event and set the definite time, and will say that they have no more faith in our warning than in theirs. This is the attitude of the world today. Unbelief is widespread, and the preaching of Christ's coming is mocked at and derided.*3

These words of Christ should sink into the hearts of all who believe present truth: "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." Our danger is presented before us by Christ Himself. He knew the perils we should meet in these last days, and would have us prepare for them. "As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man." They were eating and drinking, planting and building, marrying and giving in marriage, and knew not until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the Flood came and swept them all away.*3

The day of God will find men absorbed in like manner in the business and pleasures of the world, in feasting and gluttony, and in indulging perverted appetite in the defiling use of liquor and the narcotic tobacco. This is already the condition of our world, and these indulgences are found even among God's professed people, some of whom are following the customs and partaking of the sins of the world. Lawyers, mechanics, farmers, traders, and even ministers from the pulpit are crying, "Peace and safety," when destruction is fast coming upon them.*3

It is our duty to warn the world that Christ is at hand. The signs are fulfilling and the door of grace is closing. Interestingly the 10 virgins were asleep but 5 of them had made provisions in case the groom delayed. Apparently, the Lord has delayed his promise but we cannot stop, even for a moment, preaching with conviction and strength:

JESUS IS COMING, AMEN, YES, COME LORD JESUS!

The Shaking - Part 2

I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire…* 1

...I was shown the people of God, and saw them mightily shaken * 2

Soon the shaking will arrive violently. God's people must prepare now.

Some, with strong faith and agonizing cries, were pleading with God. Their countenances were pale, and marked with deep anxiety, expressive of their internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness were expressed in their countenances, while large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads. Now and then their faces would light up with the marks of God's approbation, and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them. Evil angels crowded around them, pressing their darkness upon them, to shut out Jesus from their view, that their eyes might be drawn to the darkness that surrounded them, and they distrust God and next murmur against Him. Their only safety was in keeping their eyes directed upward. Angels of God had charge over His people, and as the poisonous atmosphere from the evil angels was pressed around these anxious ones, the heavenly angels were continually wafting their wings over them, to scatter the thick darkness. * 2

Although, we will have to face this great struggle, the Lord has promised us that He will always be with us. But the mercy of God only extends to those who have given their heart to Him.

Some, I saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and pleading. They seemed indifferent and careless. They were not resisting the darkness around them, and it shut them in like a thick cloud. The angels of God left these, and I saw them hastening to the assistance of those who were struggling with all their energies to resist the evil angels, and trying to help themselves by calling upon God with perseverance. But the angels left those who made no effort to help themselves, and I lost sight of them. As the praying ones continued their earnest cries, a ray of light from Jesus would at times come to them, to encourage their hearts, and light up their countenances.* 2

We cannot ignore our duty. If we reject the loving voice of God, His angels will go and help all those who are willing to follow Jesus even if the heavens collapse.

My attention was then turned to the company I had seen, who were mightily shaken. I was shown those whom I had before seen weeping and praying with agony of spirit. The company of guardian angels around them had been doubled, and they were clothed with an armor from their head to their feet. They moved in exact order, firmly, like a company of soldiers. Their countenances expressed the severe conflict which they had endured, the agonizing struggle they had passed through. Yet their features, marked with severe internal anguish, now shone with the light and glory of heaven. They had obtained the victory, and it called forth from them the deepest gratitude, and holy, sacred joy.

The numbers of this company had lessened. Some had been shaken out, and left by the way. The careless and indifferent, who did not join with those who prized victory and salvation enough to perseveringly plead and agonize for it, did not obtain it, and they were left behind in darkness, but their numbers were immediately made up by others taking hold of the truth and coming into the ranks. Still the evil angels pressed around them, but they could have no power over them. I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth in great power. It had effect.* 2

Thanks to our Lord’s mercy, these days will be shortened, and soon we will see Jesus descend in the clouds of heaven. Oh, if we only pleaded now for the Lord to come, but when we face that great struggle, day and night we will cry out for His return.

I saw them perplexed. Next I heard them crying unto God earnestly. Through the day and night their cry ceased not. I heard these words: "Thy will, O God, be done! If it can glorify Thy name, make a way of escape for Thy people! Deliver us from the heathen round about us! They have appointed us unto death; but Thine arm can bring salvation." These are all the words that I can bring to mind. All seemed to have a deep sense of their unworthiness, and manifested entire submission to the will of God. Yet like Jacob, every one, without an exception, was earnestly pleading and wrestling for deliverance. Soon after they had commenced their earnest cry, the angels, in sympathy, would have gone to their deliverance. But a tall, commanding angel suffered them not. Said he: "The will of God is not yet fulfilled. They must drink of the cup. They must be baptized with the baptism."

Soon I heard the voice of God which shook the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. Buildings were shaken down, and fell on every side. I then heard a triumphant shout of victory, loud, musical, and clear. I looked upon this company, who, a short time before, were in such distress and bondage. Their captivity was turned. A glorious light shone upon them. How beautiful they then looked! All weariness and marks of care were gone; health and beauty were seen in every countenance. Their enemies, the heathen around them, fell like dead men. They could not endure the light that shone upon the delivered, holy ones. This light and glory remained upon them until Jesus was seen in the clouds of heaven, and the faithful, tried company were changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, from glory to glory. The graves were opened and the saints came forth, clothed with immortality, crying: "Victory over death and the grave!" and together with the living saints they were caught up to meet their Lord in the air, while rich, musical shouts of glory and victory proceeded from every immortal tongue.* 2

Our Citizenship Is In Heaven

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20

As we understand that our citizenship is in heaven, our effort needs to be focused on getting there. The heroes of faith moved forward with that thought in mind.

For he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Hebrews 11:10

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13-16

We are strangers and pilgrims on this earth, in search of our heavenly home. One must understand that we cannot be part of this world or participate in the things of this world. The Lord Jesus tells us,

If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. John 15:18, 19

There needs to be a marked difference in ourselves and in our churches. There is a strong movement within many religions to convert their worship styles into something more contemporary. The aim is to attract more members to churches. In reality however, they are becoming a social club rather than a place to preach of the Lord’s prompt return.

We cannot allow the world to enter our churches. We are called to share the message with all, salvation is available to everyone but sin will never be accepted by God.

We see that the prophets of God were never popular. Even Jesus was rejected by his own people and His disciples were not popular either. God's message has rarely been popular. If we compare wordly pleasures to God’s service, the things of the world are apparently more attractive. Therefore, Jesus tells us,

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:13, 14

We are the light of the world, called to illuminate a dark world full of sin. And we are that light because we reflect Christ.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16

Unfortunately, many preach that they are acting in the name of the Lord, many are apparently doing His will, but offer strange worship that is unacceptable to God. The Bible does not change and if we understand the holiness that exists in heaven, the angels veil their faces in worship to God, should we not be in communion with God under the same sanctity as the angels? Therefore the Lord says,

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! Matthew 7:21-23

Many choose their churches because that is where they feel good, because they like some aspect of the church. Perhaps they choose their church because it agrees with their ideas.

But the purpose of the church is to bring you to the Lord to save you. The key questions we must ask when choosing a church should be, is this the place that will help me attain salvation? Is this the place that id preparing me to meet Jesus when He returns? Am I here because I feel good or because the Lord has called me out of darkness into light? Is this the narrow door through which I will reach salvation?

...You Did It To Me

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:34-40
This is your opportunity to aid those in need of spiritual, emotional and physical relief. The Lord is in control of this World and is still refraining those four winds from causing total destruction of this world until His children are sealed (Revelation 7).

This is the opportunity in which we can aid those who are in need of hope and comfort. Through your donation, not only will you aid with the most immediate needs of our brothers and sisters in Haiti, but you will also help spread the message of the prompt return of Lord.

Your Word Is A Lamp To My Feet

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. * 1
The Word of God is the light that the Lord has provided to us as a guide in this dark world. Just like the people of Israel were guided in the dark of night by a pillar of fire in the desert, his Bible enlightens our life in this dark world.

The truths of the Bible are written in a simple way that anyone can study it. However, every text is so profound that it would take us an eternity to understand. That is why its truths apply to all time periods.

Many people want clear evidence of the existence of God and the authority of His Word. Although, we find that the Bible contains much evidence and signs of the power of God, faith is an essential element.

If Jesus had made a sign to demonstrate His power, would Herod have believed Him? No! Similarly, we could have great signs and evidences yet people still would not believe. If human beings want to doubt something they always will. In actuality the Lord advises against those who will believe signs and events for the enemy will use them in a deceitful manner (Matthew 24).

So we must trust in God and in His wisdom that the Bible will reveal the path we should walk on in this world of pain and suffering. The lamp does not completely light up the dark path of the somber night, but does provide more than enough light to stay on track and avoid the pitfalls that exist. As Christian move ahead, the lamp will illuminate new parts of the road until it finally reaches its destination, heaven.

How to Study the Bible
The Bible should never be studied without prayer. The Holy Spirit alone can cause us to feel the importance of those things easy to be understood, or prevent us from wrestling truths difficult of comprehension. It is the office of heavenly angels to prepare the heart to so comprehend God's
word that we shall be charmed with its beauty, admonished by its warnings, or animated and strengthened by its promises. * 2
The Bible helps us to overcome temptation
Temptations often appear irresistible because, through neglect of prayer and the study of the Bible, the tempted one cannot readily remember God's promises and meet Satan with the Scripture weapons. But angels are round about those who are willing to be taught in divine things; and in the time of great necessity, they will bring to their remembrance the very truths which are needed* 2
The study of the Bible distinguishes God's People
But God will have a people upon the earth to maintain the Bible, and the Bible only, as the standard of all doctrines, and the basis of all reforms. The opinions of learned men, the deductions of science, the creeds or decisions of ecclesiastical councils, as numerous and discordant as are the churches which they represent, the voice of the majority,-- not one or all of these should be regarded as evidence for or against any point of religious faith. Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain "Thus saith the Lord" in its support.* 2
If God used an "It is Written" statement to overcome the temptations of Satan, we need to follow His example and do the same. Our only deliverance from the enemy’s trap is Jesus and the knowledge of His Word. Before you accept any teaching we use a "Thus saith the Lord"
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.* 3
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.... * 4
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.* 5
